In mathematics, every nonnegative real number x has a unique nonnegative square root, called the principal x^1/2, which is denoted by √x where the symbol √ is called the radical sign or radix. For example, the principal square root of 16 is 4, which is denoted by √16=4. The number whose squareroot is being considered is known as the radicand. The radicand is the number or expression underneath the radical sign, in this case 16.

Every positive number x has two square roots: √x which is positive, and √-x which is negative. Together, these two roots are denoted as ± √x . Although the principal x^1/2 of a positive number x is only one of its two square roots, the designation √ is often used to refer to the squareroot. For positive x, the principal squareroot can also be written in exponent notation, as x^1/2.

Square roots of negative numbers can be discussed within the framework of complex numbers. More generally, square roots can be considered in any context in which a notion of "squaring" of some mathematical objects is defined. These include function spaces and square matrices, among other mathematical structures

Mathematicaly, a fraction is a number that represents part of an integer whole number. It is consisted of a numerator and a denominator. The numerator represents the number of parts of that number and the denominator represents the total amount of parts that make up a whole. For example 5/7, the numerator is 5 and the denominator is7. Like all other numbers, fractions can be added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided.
